FNRttC 2nd October to Southend-on-Sea

Southend is a bit of an anomaly. The route lacks the scenic delights of Whitstable, Bognor and Brighton. It's the shortest ride we do. It is, by a way, the flattest ride we do - the Bow Flyover is the third most taxing hill. Only three miles of the route is out of streetlights. Much of the ride is through parts of London that lack charm. The halfway stop is prosaic at best. It even lacks the 'surprise' element now that we don't use the Dartford Tunnel. Despite all of these shortcomings it remains on the roster, and remains one of my favourites.

It's the easy ride. It allows riders who would struggle with any of the other rides to come along. There are some magic moments - the view from the top of the flyover of the Olympic Park, the view of the QE2 bridge, Bataville, the gas jets at Coryton, the view from Tattershall Gardens toward Hadliegh Castle, and the last few miles along the seafront. I'd add in a certain radio station, but that would be vain. The breakfast is superb, and really rapid. The train service back to London is pretty spiffy. And, if User comes with us, there are certain things that you'll find out about South Essex that you'll probably not find out any other way............

So, whatever its shortcomings, I'm fond of this ride. Chris doesn't want to see us at the Rose Restaurant any time before 7, and that's sometimes a struggle - my little chat on socialist architecture is a time-wasting exercise as much as anything else (but, then again, you guessed that). So, if you're up for a ride at conversational pace do come along - and, if you have a friend who might find Whitstable or even Brighton too tough, consider Southend as an alternative.

One word of warning. It gets cold in South Essex. Keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared to wrap up well.

Me please.

Simon, if you wanted to extend the ride without necessarily adding to the mileage greatly you might want to consider diverting at Hadleigh down to the Castle (site of next Olympic Mountain Biking event) which is only half a mile off the main road and would make a pleasant alternative to Tattershall Gardens to watch the sun come up over the Thames Estuary, Kent and surrounds. Great views and a very pleasant ten minute stroll round the castle ruins. Just a thought.

Then there's always Canvey Island as a potential diversion but I then remembered how flat and featureless it was for the first 24 years of my life save the pub mentioned in Dickens Great Expectations (Smack Inn) and one picturesque thatched cottage built by early Dutch settlers, so maybe not.

Alternatively you could alternate Bread and Cheese Hill, which is essentially featureless with that of Essex Way which is far more picturesque and goes past a pub that was in existence in the sixteenth century (The Anchor). Essex Way is far more spread out and slightly more of a test than Bread and Cheese IMO, has some Estuary views and a fair few large houses at the top to oggle at on the way to the Hadleigh roundabout. Hughie Green used to live there and this is where Essex drug dealers, local lottery winners and people from Canvey who have done good now live.

Here for rides.
Think I coughed most of the phlegm out of my lungs riding my MTB at a conversational pace over the Downs around Arundel yesterday. Most of the conversation was with myself though I did chat to most of a coach load of rambling Geordie's on Stane Street. They would insist in standing on the really rooty bits of path that I wanted to hammer across. Ah divent na, hinny, hoo thes ganna ride that doon that. I think they were somewhat startled when I began to respond, cheerfully, in fluent pitmatic.

One more for the southend list please Simon - email duly sent

PS Given you lot aka the FNRttC brigade seem to be the only people on here who talk any sense I have question....

Stinging nettle 'venom' Does anyone know if it has any long term +ve or -ve effects. It's just that my last two off road rides have involved shorts and a short sleeved top and riding nettle based single track with attendant arm/leg tingling for hours and hours and hours afterwards.... and a weird sense of euphoria. Or is that just the mountain biking?

I'm keen to be in on this one please, Simon. First "Great" Western seem to have other ideas, so would you put me down with a question mark and I'll confirm as soon as I can?

Greg - not sure about nettles, but a couple of timely wasp-stings and you'll be positively benborping it up the hills. I've been recommending this widely since I discovered it by accident not long ago, and there are strangely few takers so far...
