I'm afraid I have to announce my withdrawal. After being clipped by a passing car on the Walworth Road last night I now have a five piece collar bone. I doubt I'll be up to the ride.

cycling back might be a breeze - it's getting there that could be tough. Rain and 17mph headwinds at the moment.

The HST does take bikes, but I'm not sure how many - I'll enquire. 37 minutes back to St. Pancras sounds pretty good.

That's terrible news Ben. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Desperately bad news Ben. Best wishes for a 100% recovery and everyone here breathes a sigh of relief that you are not pace setting on the SMRbtLwishes you well, I'm sure. A gentleman of the road.;)m

Ooo! Add in a few tonnes of grit and sand to exfoliate and we have another Southend return...'The Terrace' is looking prettier by the moment!;)

What's all this talk of 'rain'? It doesn't rain on the FNRttC. Everyone knows. At least, it never used to, before Simon got his mystery illness... Something he's given to the cat, perhaps.

Arrrgh. Sorry to hear that. I've broken my collar bone three times - it's most inconsiderate for you to top that in a single incident. Outclassing the competition in every sphere! Here's hoping it mends fast.

Ouch! Hope you recover well and quickly. A guy I know was hit last week, right clavicle broken. He had an op Monday & he's off the bike for three months....could have been much worse for both of you.

LOL, a 20 miles (1 - 1.5 hours trip?) diversion to reduce the train time by less than one hour.

Incidentally, there only seem to be one 37 minute train an hour, starting at 9-18 on Saturday morning, and then at 18 minutes past the hour thereafter. Not the most convenient of services, I think I stick with going direct from Whitstable.

you're absolutely right - and for both Adrian and myself Victoria is a better bet than St. Pancras. I think we're both motivated by the train-spotting bug.

I was thinking the same, as I'd already looked at the logistics of the HS1.

Next year, it will be better, once the full timetable starts running and linking in more stations, so in theory I'll be able to get home to Luton in just over 1½ hours compared with about 2½ hours at the moment.

Whitstable to Bromley South, just over an hour. Ride from Bromley South to home about 40 minutes. Total less than 2hrs

Ride from Whitstable to Ashford about an hour and a half say. Train to St Pancras 40 minutes. Ride home from there another hour. Total a bit over three hours plus a supplement for the privilege of using the High Speed Train.

It makes no sense at all, apart from two things. Firstly I avoid Bromley and secondly it might be fun.

Spot on Adrian. After all, it's not rocket science is it? ;)

Bromley is quite nice in parts I understand (Hello Andy  )
