Thanks for the input RE lighting- good job I asked. Follow up questions:
The Hope is a bit pricey for my taste (but if it does the job, I'm prepared to go for it...), but the quoted run time bothers me more (3 hours? sheesh...that bothers me in general, let alone on this type of ride). I assume that you have the option of turning it down when there's more ambient light (and hence extending run time rather dramatically)?
Second: How about a 530/320 combo? Bear in mind I am chicken and will not be doing 35 mph decents in broad daylight let alone darkness...
Third: I was going to ask about the EL600 & 610, but the bikeradar reviews seem to imply that they're not cut out for rural riding....

Simon, if you don't have a backpack and you don't use panniers, where do you put all the kit and caboodle you (quite rightly) ask to be brought along? Unless your jersey has really, really big pockets I don't get it....

Wiggle are the current CTC shop bods, and their list price for the Vision 1 is £90, so if you apply the CTC 10% membership discount or alternatively apply your 10% Wiggle Platinium discount (if like me you've spent enough in the last 12 months!) it'll still cost £81 there.

Hills wise at least I can go practise at Ditchling itself.... and turners hill....

1. I tend to wear less than most...
2. Phone, debit card, wodge of cash (for taxis in the event we have an unrepairable mechanical) and printed sheets (taxi numbers, and rides lists), mini-pump in back pockets
3. Lock slung messenger-stylee around shoulder
4. Showerproof top in bottle cage if the weather forecast is for rain
5. Spare inner tubes (the pre-talced variety, Specialized red packet jobbys), tyre levers, multi-tool in little pack under saddle

Aye, take it you are riding back?

Yes - tinkering with the idea of going via the Coast and up through Hampshire...but I strongly advise a ride with 'Brilliant Brian' if it is possible. An education on wheels.
200kms back via the Coastline Lee... - and that's just to 'mine' - not 'yours'
