OK, I'll give the johnsons baby powder and a sandwich bag route a try. I'll try most things once and I have nothing to loose but my credibility in the eyes of my family if they catch me preparing it.

The talc on and in most new tubes is left over from the manufacturing process, and is there to stop the hot tube from sticking to itself before it's cooled down.

There is some argument about the necessity of using Talc. Jobst Brandt gets quite irate about it, but he gets pretty irate about anything which he has set his mind against (and if your not with him, you're against him!).

I suspect it may help getting tyres on slightly, and it's not exactly onerous to slap a bit of talc on the spare tyres just in case. It has the added benefit that my tyres are also likely to be free of Athlete's Foot!

With repaired tyres, it's necessary to make sure that the bits of the tyre where the vulcanising solution hasn't been covered by the patch are stuck to something other than the rest of the tyre.

Take one Shimano Ultegra dyno-hub on a Mavic OpenPro rim and plug into it one B&M Cyo senso plus and darkness is banished. I'm looking forward to giving the setup a proper test Friday night.

y'man Jobst Brandt sounds like he defines a "typical serious cyclist" aka my worst nightmare to me. Big on firmly held opinions short on tolerance of those who don't share them. Does he out opine the chap who runs the rivendell company/cult in america I wonder?

vulcanising solution? how quaint. but it is nice to ride around with a mini cheese grater thingy and a small block of small soft stone if that is what floats your boat. Will the use of glueless patches see me cast into outer darkness or have sages shaking their heads? i love 'em and have never had one fail on me yet.

and what is is about the -less suffix in cycling? glueless patches self evidently have glue on them in exactly the same way as my clipless pedals have a ruddy great clip built into them. then again tubeless tyres don't have tubes sowhat do I know? The internal angle of two sides of a regular octagon is 135 degrees for one thing!

On the subject of talc, I'm just a little concerned about 100 people leaving a mist of lilly of the valley behind them as they wend their way southwards.

let's be honest about this. If you're in the Madeira Cafe with a few dozen cyclists (of the male persuasion) a bit of talc can do no harm.
I put a new tyre on the (rebuilt) front wheel this morning. It was tough going. Three levers and a whole lot of language. I must be getting old.
