My grandad lived in Peel Street (knocked down?) and was a riveter in Lairds. He was born in the 1890's in St Helens. Living through the era he did and me being a child of 1969 was quite interesting. He would eat absolutely anything and nothing would go to waste. He would boil a chicken carcass for 3 consecutive days to make soup which he'd slurp from the pan....."ooh, that's champion!"
Of course this would revolt the little me who's idea of a diet was fish fingers and chips.

He moved to the OAP flats in Ward Grove, Rock Ferry. We'd go and see him on a Saturday afternoon, the Alpine pop van would come round and we'd get cream soda, then watch the wrestling.
This thread has jogged lots of memories. Thanks for that.
Fantastic!

We used to "play out" at Rock Ferry............that was about our limit distance-wise. There was a piece of open land off the river which was for some reason called "The Brokey" (spelling ??) and it was full of rabbits until mixamatosis killed them all.
I recall the Alpine pop van but my mum worked in a sweet shop which sold pop so we never went short of our fix of high concentrate sugar
My mum used to re-boil the chicken carcass just the once (we must have been posh).

Cheese and onion or cheese and egg done in the oven in a metal dish. The Lancashire cheese would melt to a stringy goo :hungry: and the egg would turn rubbery and plastic.I once tried to get the same affect as my mum's cheese and onion or egg but it didn't taste the same.

You make your dog compare prices and pay for her dinner?

I only give her a small allowance. She is only a puppy when she gets older she can catch her own.
And mine!

I never did like sugar butties but sometimes it was all that was available.
M & S tinned curry chicken/lamb is really very good although a little expensive. When it's on offer we stock up on it
Chips cooked in lard.............yummy. I have to admit........we now use a Tefal Actifry for our "chips"........not bad but not like "real" chips.

I love tripe - but then I am a pork butcher's daughter.

As a child, I used to eat raw sausage. Then it was suddenly banned. I have a vision that at first my mother didn't realise the perils of letting me eat it.
I like tripe as well. Mum did it with spuds, onion and milk. It was kind of a mashed potato stew with small chunks of tripe. I tried making it myself but although it tasted just as nice I didn't like handling the tripe. Really odd rubbery texture
