I find the excessive joy at Germany’s exit a bit bemusing. It’s only notable because it’s such a rare occurrence - we certainly didn’t see this kind of reaction from German fans after England’s ignominious early exit in 2014.

Loew’s post-match press conference was dignified and level-headed. I somehow doubt the front pages of Germany’s newspapers tomorrow will be showing his face on a turnip.

Sure, Germany won’t be winning their fifth World Cup this year, but nor will England be winning their second. Are either of these facts truly something to celebrate?

I’m more disappointed that Nigeria are out than happy that Germany are too.

I'd give this two likes if I could.

There were folk at work who have no interest in football whatsoever laughing at Germany's demise and Argentina's woes. Weird mentality.

I wasn't clear at all in my post. I wasn't expressing my opinion in that England should try to come second. But it would perhaps be fortuitous if they did.

Keeping the winning habit is important. But i think it's better to build gradually. Meeting improved opposition at each step. And being the parent of small children i understand the value of choosing your battles if you want to win the war.
I'm left feeling that England haven't really been tested yet and their midfield looks very find-out-able. I suspect Belgium will easily have enough guile to exploit that. Belgium are a far stronger team than the teams they've faced so far. Though England's attack has looked pretty strong there's a lot of weakness behind. If England lose, I think it will be because they've been found out.

The top half of the draw has Brazil, France, Argentina, Portugal, Uruguay and Mexico.

England need to finish second to avoid all those teams.

That's pretty well much what I said upthread.

Yes, it's nice to win the group, but given the way the draw has panned out - and certainly NOT as predicted before the start of the tournament - I think a certain amount of prudence might be wise in this instance.

I wouldn't be unhappy with a 0-0 draw tbh.

England's QF opponent will be either the winner of France-Argentina if they win the group, or the winner of Croatia-Denmark if they finish second. Which one of those is supposed to be the easy option? On tournament form so far, Croatia are perhaps the ones you really want to avoid. ETA: Hang on, scratch that - completely misread the fixture list. If they finish second, the QF opponent will be the winner of Sweden-Switzerland, which sounds like an easier tie on paper, though Sweden did stuff Mexico today... and if they win the group, the QF opponent will be the winner of Brazil-Mexico.

And that's assuming they get past whoever they face in the next round out of Colombia, Senegal or Japan - none of which will be pushovers.

I'm waiting with glee to find out how the tabloids will tear them to pieces when they do get knocked out. Too nice? Time to "toughen up" is my guess...
