Oh I see, you didn't watch it...
Not only did I watch it live, I went back to iplayer and watched it again to check...
Exquisite pass from Henderson to set Sterling off on a run that started from inside England's half of the pitch to take the ball to the edge of the Swedish penalty area. He then plays it sideways past the Swedish defender... the question is whether he meant to pass it to Kane or was trying to play around the defender himself... Having watched it again, I still think it was intended to be a pass.
Maybe it's open to interpretation but either way, the end result is that he created a genuine scoring opportunity when moments earlier Sweden had been on the attack, and if Kane's shot had gone a few inches the other side of the post, people would be remembering it very differently.
As for his two chances just before half time, for the first I think he knew he was offside (even if the linesman left it very late to flag) and that made him hesitate, for the second perhaps he should have passed it to Kane earlier but it's easy for us to say that from the comfort of our sofas. Also have to give the Swedish keeper credit for getting a hand to the ball to make it harder for him.
I will take the opinion of several top ex-players that he played brilliantly over the views of the assembled experts of the internet. Like Neymar, I think Sterling has a reputation problem that means people pre-judge his performances. His record of 23 goals this season at City shows that he is not the same wayward player he was in his early days at Liverpool, yet that's all that some people seem to want to see when he plays.
