What's with players covering their mouths when talking to the ref?

It's to stop them from being lip-read if they say something controversial or offensive (like saying Yid, for example) and the media get hold of it etc..

I fully agree that there is no place for derogatory names/terms in virtually all situations.
But in English football, the term is used by Spurs fans to describe themselves (or their team's players) regardless of their religion/race/ethnicity.

So, IMO, a Spurs fan isn't being anti-semantic, but attributing to his team's background, and possibly their own.
