The best for years. Quite often the tournament can be a bit of a dull affair with few stand out games, but this one has been engrossing from the start.

Big night in Denmark last night, everyone out with their BBQs. Not a bad game against Croatia with 2 scrappy goals very early on. Denmark improved in the second half and Schmeikel saved a penalty in the last seconds of normal time. It went into penalties during which Schmeikel complained to the referee that the Croatian player and alterered his run up to take the penalty. The referee was having non of it. Jorgensen did exactly the same thing for Denmark and altered his run up and missed. Denmark out of the world cup, and rightly so. I bet he never practiced that in training.

Christian Eriksen , the current golden boy of Danish football, missed his penalty just to finish off a pretty dismal World Cup for him.

Croatia won 3-2 on penalties.

Schmeikel complained to the referee that the Croatian player and alterered his run up to take the penalty. The referee was having non of it.

On UK tv the pundits were saying you can do what ever you like in the run up, but as soon as you place your supporting foot down next to the ball you have to kick it. You can't delay or stop at that point, So the goalie knows that once you enter the final stride you have to kick it.

They're capable of so much more. I was looking forward to them coming to life in the knockout stages but it sounds like they were pretty dismal yesterday. And Russia obviously had a very effective game plan.

I was out on my bike all day yesterday but it sounds like I have no reason to be disappointed at missing that match.

Looking forward to Mexico-Brazil later. Can't see that one being a bore-draw.

The kicker may run at an angle, arc or straight at the ball. However, no stopping or pausing no matter how short during the run before the ball is kicked is permitted.

That's what I find so frustrating. You look at that side and on paper they should be ripping everyone apart without breaking a sweat. The reality of their game is so far removed from what I want to see.

If the rules of penalty taking were observed they'd never get taken. 95% of the time players are encroaching or the keeper has moved off his line.

Personally I think the jittery/interrupted run thing does the kick taker no favours.

Based purely on what I've seen over the years, fannying about usually results in a disaster. Pick your corner and belt it, the keeper will have no chance.
