Our sports teacher was a sadist... he put so many people off sport in his 25 year tenure that it's surprising anyone in the Rothwell/ Wakefield area can get off a sofa.

We might look at how much top footballers (And actors and musicians, let's not forget them) earn, but to millions of people in the third world the living standard of an unemployed person in this country is one of unimagined luxury.

If we take the time to look down as well as up there are far more below us than there are above.

Sermon over, carry on whinging.

I heard that someone on benefits in the UK is in the wealthiest top 10% of the world.

Our sports teacher was a sadist... .

In one school I went to the gym teacher was an ex marine. But he was incredibly patient with me, a lad who had difficulty kneeling on the box without shivering! My balance has always been bad & I don't like stairs. Interestingly, since I started cycling again my balance seems to have improved.

The salaries of the top players are eye-wateringly high. I don't see how it can be changed given as others have said how massive the EPL is now globally. What I would like to see, though which could be done more easily is greater sharing of all this wealth from the top down. It's a massive shame to see teams like Hereford Utd for example go under (the club was wound up in the High Court in December) when there's all that cash further up the hierachy. It sometimes feels like the Premier League is sucking the life out of our more grassroots football.

@Glow worm

Why's that then out of interest?

Footballers are not necessarily overpaid. At the very top level they earn a large amount but this is related to the revenues they generate.

End of the day if someone could generate me revenue of say £20m a year I'd consider it a good deal if I paid them £10m.

Footballers are no different to other sportsmen/women at the top of their game - they all earn fortunes. Ditto film stars, rock/pop stars etc. Christ - you can even get half a million a year for reading the late night news or be a total light entertainment twonk and earn £5m pa+.

Re the 'bag of wind' comment somewhere upthread.

Football is a difficult game to play - at the top level it is extremely skilful and demands huge levels of fitness and dedication to training etc etc. I'm not sure why people are so ready to bash the sport that gives pleasure to millions. There are very few people on the planet that reach the very top level of this sport out of the many millions that play it.

It always amuses me when I listen to non-fans banging on about how easy it is to play the game and how much they get paid for 90 minutes work. It is nothing like easy and they put way more than 90 minutes a week into their job. These guys are some of the fittest athletes on the planet and we should all know what that takes to achieve being part of a cycling forum.

NB: for those that hate these big wages, don't forget about half ends up with HMRC.

On a much lesser not I did £150 worth of work at a garage last week and had 2 valeters watch me the whole time, they then moaned that I earned too much. Green eyed monster and all that stuff.

Not only fit, but incredibly tough. Football is a contact sport, and not shoulder to shoulder but boot to bone. To make it you've got to be able to take a set of studs down the shin or on the ankle, pick yourself up and get on with it without bottling the next challenge. Some of the most skilful players in history are complete unknowns because they were nowhere near hard enough to last a professional match and never got near the first team.
