There are just way too many models of car out there - back in the day Ford had what 3 or 4 models on the go ? Nowadays how big is their range - 9 cars or more ? Different fuel systems ? Needed to be simplified. Tesla seem to be doing OK with the 4 i think ?

The very first new car I ever owned was a Fiesta 1.1L, reg DBR732S, I think. Since then had a few in the family, wife had two of them, daughters 2 & 3 shared one after passing their driving test. Daughters 1, 2 and 3 all bought Fiestas subsequently. All reliable and trouble free (in some cases, considering their age when bought).

there is a bit of that... what model did the Fiesta replace? correct, nothing it was new, under (in terms of size) the Escort, then there was the Capri, Cortina and Granada. various renames, then a Ka slots in underneath, then came people carriers and now all heaps of SUvs and vriants.

"Ford's new baby" I think was the tag line. I seem to remember the TV advert was the camera panning across a field and then it appeared from behind the hedgerow.

Not many new cars about in Hull at the time. The first Fiestas I remember were police cars

Cars have grown so the more recent Fiesta is not that much smaller than a Cortina was. An equally markable growth is compare a Peugeot 208 with the earlier nominally the same car type 205.

For what it’s worth I think that there are several factors at play, but mainly, the price isn’t competitive in comparison with other small hatches, and with the government saying all new cars have to be electric from 2030, it’s probably better to design a new model with space to fit a battery that will give a good range and have room for all the required safety features, hence the Fiesta is being dropped

I think it was Fords competition to VW’s Golf, the Golf was out on I think the N Registration, so 1974/75, the Ford Fiesta was released on the R Registration, so 1976/77, they saw how popular the Golf was and wanted a cut of that segment, to be fair it’s had a good production run

The original Fiesta had a 1.0L engine about the same power as a Morris Minor, so slow. Never had one, but was driven around the Isle of Man circuit in an ST and that was a hoot.

The Ford Golf was the Escort - the Fiesta was a Polo competitor, which was launched 1975.

At the time yes. Had two, an overly go faster striped blue one with a 945 engine, bit like cycling - fast downhill slower uphill which was replaced by a silver diesel. Great ground clearance, not knowing how to get to the hamlet I was heading and with a pretty poor map I made it their via unsurfaced bridleway. The blue one saw a number of body shops and presumably if it had a larger engine would have been written off when an Audi in front me did an ABS assisted emergency stop. Saw it after I sold it in various conditions between dented once again and perfect. The silver one got dented by another car whilst parked in a car park and the body shop managed to spray the repair the wrong silver; they resprayed it correctly but it never really looked right.
