A few strands of my rear brake cable are frayed at the place where the clamp is currently holding the cable. W̶h̶e̶n̶ ̶I̶ ̶c̶a̶n̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶b̶o̶t̶h̶e̶r̶e̶d̶ At some point soon I will replace the cable. My question is, is it safe to use the bike in the meantime? I have been on a few short rides on it, and the brakes work fine, I don't need to pull very far on the levers and they have plenty of bite.

I have a couple of generic bike brake cables lying around that I used to use on my hybrids. Can I use those or do I need road bike specific brake cables?

The blob at the end of a MTB cable and RB cable differ. On a road bike it is connected axially and on a MTB transversely. However, both work in both even if it is a bit inelegant. A file and some elbow grease and some common sense can make even the most stubborn incompatible ones change gender.
