He had to be incredibly strong and fit.
The cantilevered turning moment, manhandling the first of those 20 foot long planks across a 16 foot gap, sitting on a foot wide bosun's chair, must have been phenomenal, especially with the added problem of strong winds 200 foot up.

Mind you, he may have been a craftsman but, be honest, you'd have to pretty thick to continue to do the job his way after hydraulic platforms had been invented... as you can see from the film.... where do you think the camera crew, director and sound recordist were standing.....

Maybe I got the correct vibe off him after all (post #29).
Very possibly. "Not a nice man" was the general feeling.

Doesn't detract from his enthusiasm or knowledge, though, or the appeal of his programmes. I mean, should I avoid Dickens' books just because he had a wife with ten children but used to get the train to the coast to shag his mistress - or because they are overblown sentimental potboilers?

I'm not questioning his expertise etc, I just meant I never liked him much and actually, I wasn't aware of his past as, well, I never had any reason to look into it, so he obviously gave a bad vibe on screen.

I think what I was trying to say is that however fastidious he might have been about his equipment, there must be times where it only takes something small to happen and if you aren't careful/don't notice then it'll grow into to something potentially dangerous. Besides, what safety backup did he have, really?

Accidents don't just happen, they are a result of a series of events leading up to it.

and theres the operative words. he has the skills and knowledge to check things .

hydraulic platforms fail and have a nasty habit of falling over if not used correctly so all work at Height has its risks. his way is/was no worse than any currrent methods

I can understand a quick re-cap after the advert break for the benefit of those who were channel hopping and come in part way through the program or for the ones who use the breaks for a quick chat on here / with other people in the room etc.

by quick, i'm meaning 30 seconds or less!
Doesn't take 30 seconds to say "Now back to Fred Dibner."
He always used to wear a flat cap. I'm sure it saved his life many times.

He also never wore an iPod. Makes you think doesn't it?
Fred once caught an infection in his head from his grubby cap!
