Thanks folks.

Even if wall-mounting is viable, to be honest I've gone right off the idea, given the potential for cock-ups and the need for removal / “making good” if I ever move out. While in principle this would be a cleaner solution, something freestanding would be easier to achieve, more flexible, potentially easier to achieve and reversible.. so I’m pretty resolute this is the direction I want to go.

Thanks to those who’ve actually suggested solutions – while none really stand out as ideal you’ve brought to my attention some options I’d not previously seen and it’s given me a few ideas.

I used one of these for a good while: Top Peak Two Up Stand

How low are your ceilings? Its quite tall so needs a bit of space.
Thanks - in practical terms looks like the least-worst avalable solution currently, although while it's not terrible I'm not overly keen on the aesthetic.

I do note that they offer both the cylinder-mounted holders, as well as bolt-on wall mount alternatives separately - so I wonder if these could be added to a modified piece of furniture / a more aesthetically pleasing / functional wooden stand.... although of course that would rely on my pulling my finger out and designing / modifying something.

I use one of these, but probably purchased some 15 years ago, and it doesn't seem to be on sale anymore :-(
If you had another pair of hangers on the rear, you could potentially hang 4 bikes.
It's a Gearup Oakrak:

*There are two versions, the one like this which is completely free standing, and has the 4 feet at the bottom, and an almost identical looking one, that has a sprung part at the top, but no feet, with the idea being you brace it against a suitable joist.
I did look on ebay, and there a couple of the 'brace' ones on there, but none with the feet arrangement like above, though one may pop up I guess.
Cheers - like the look of that, however typically as you say it doesn't seem available any more. I do like the idea of the braced job, but none of those I'm seeing really look like anything I'd like in my living room..

When I didnt want to drill into my last rented flat's walls I used three of these, I still use one in my new place.

Cheers - unfortunately however I need the bikes to be flat against the wall so storage in that orientation isn't really viable..
