My favourite musical discovery of 2020 is actually my discovery of someone else's 2020 discovery (albeit 43 years after the music was made).

Namely, watching accomplished online guitar teacher Michael Palmisano's joyous reaction as he listens for the first time to Jerry Garcia's most zenithal of zenithal moments (and there were many), in his newfound discovery of the Dead. That's EXACTLY how it gets me too, every time I listen to it. Thankfully I've known about it for many years.

Nice too to have some analysis of what was going on, and what makes it so good, but in his excitement he overlooked the exquisite pinched harmonic where Jerry bursts through into a new universe (23' 56").....:becool:

Fortunately for Dead fans, he's gradually working his way through the entire 8 May 1977 concert at Cornell. Here he is, utterly engrossed and virtually lost for words by Jerry's outstandingly poignant playing and singing, and the whole band's performance, on the beautiful Morning Dew.

For reasons best known to the YouTube algorithms I have spent the latter half of the year listening exclusively to ridiculous power metal, which has made me very happy indeed. DragonForce's 10 minute lockdown compositions in the style of other bands have been sustaining my sanity. Here's them doing Nightwish.

And somebody actually recording a proper version.

Have you seen the one with Herman listening to the Venezuelan guy playing Through the Fire and Flames with a recorder?

Yeah that one's great. I think he mugs things up for the camera but he did seem genuinely impressed.

Speaking of recorders did you see the Team Recorder / Davie504 response video where she brings out that massive contrabass recorder that looks like a cruise missile or something? That was cool. And bassy af.

Honestly, weird-ass musician YouTube battle videos have been keeping me going.

Edit: slight correction, it's a subcontrabass recorder.

Not found much new really, a bunch of bands I already knew about had new stuff out - Burzum, Annihilator, Stabbing Westward, Necrodeath, Zeal & Ardor -amongst others which I've mostly enjoyed.

I discovered these in 2020, although obviously recorded years ago. I doubt there was anything produced in 2020 that was worth listening to. It's all 5h1t3.

One thing I love about YouTube videos is people playing well known tunes either using completely different instruments, or, in a completely different way to the original.

Here are my two current faves:

@RubaixCube posted this in the what are you listening to thread. Thalia, the lead guitar, was only 19 when this was recorded. It is good to see the youngsters making proper metal

I personally found out that i didnt get on that well with "Unleash The Archers" -- you probably would have gotten them in your recommendations after watching Frozen Crown if you already hadnt (Not that they are a bad band by an means!)
