Friday night music, the original is lesser known than the cover.

There was a documentary on Sky about the Go Go's, they did a UK tour as openers for bands on the 2 Tone label, I'm sure they said that Belinda Carlisle had a fling with Jerry Dammers of The Specials.

It was Jane Wiedlin and Terry Hall that had an affair and then co-wrote Our Lips Are Sealed.

In the context of this thread it's strange that the Go Go's version is put forward as the lesser known version, but it's actually far better know than the Fun Boy Three version.

Covered by some boy band - my daughter won't admit that this is the original.

This annoys the shoot out of me. Cat Stevens / Yusuf sang this solo but using two voices. Boyzone had five members in the group but had one person sing it, using the same voice throughout. It's supposed to be a duet FGS.

Covered with much more success by ... was it ... Jimmy Cliff?

Maxi Priest I think.

It *was* Jimmy Cliff first, just checked. He released it a few weeks after Cat Stevens and it made No. 8 in the chart. Cat's version was only released on LP (Tea For The Tillerman). Maxi Priest's version, being reggae-inspired, is probably more a cover of Cliff than of the original, sgtrictly speaking.

Agreed about the duet in Father and Son. It's a very clever bit of writing, and the two tunes blend extremely well. CS had a good vocal range, and the octave-apart different parts suited his voice. Boyzone's version was flat and unimaginative.

... the usual formulaic music, a lone female singing a slowed down, stripped back version of a song.
