I'd rather not do the A132 from South Woodham Ferrers. Have you an alternative.

We could get round faster than it took us to wait for the ferry, ferry across, regroup, and then set off though.

Very quick look at a map suggests we could use Woodham Road out of South Woodham then north a bit on Main Road to Warren Road and cross south of Hanningfield reservoir and kind of sort it out from there.

I'll follow the majority view though, if you really want to faff about waiting for a ferry....

You could use Long Martin as a temporary bridge across the Thames? He's definitely tall enough...

You want to stay off the A132 between South Woodham Ferrers and the A130 - it's a bit of a race track for the cars. But Woodham Road (the old road) is fine. After the A130 junction, the A132 is okay through Runwell and down to Wickford. AFter that, you pays your money and takes your choice, but Basildon on a Saturday morning has got to be experienced at least once in a lifetime....

That's what I am looking at on the map..Old Woodham Road, Runwell, Wickford, A132 crossing the arterial, through Basildon, A132, A1321, B1419 to join the London Road at Vange

Yep - that's the way I'd go, picking up the normal route to Dartford from Vange, including the obligatory wrong exit at the Five Bells roundabout closely followed by the Grays one-way system scenic variation Enjoy! BTW, my grandad ran one of the first supermarkets in Basildon which was on Timberlog Lane (the B1419). I remember visiting his shop and playing in the fields opposite. No fields there now, but the parade of shops is still there. Well rough now though.

the route out goes along Woodham Road. We saw two cars at most along the entire length.
