Might there be a Costa express in the filling station outside?
Apparently so:

Actually, on reflection, the Costa might be within the main building and, of a night time, shut.
I don't think the above link refers to the filling station so, in terms of answering your question, is useless.

What is this talk of 24" gears?

Is 'pretty darned flat' just marketing-speak?
Initially, I thought Horndon-on-the-Hill had been misnamed, and should've just been called Horndon.
For there was no hill in Horndon.
It troubled me for a while.
Then it troubled me no more.
Instead I had a different sort of trouble.
Trouble of the false summit (or two) sort.
69" fixed. Or 42 x 16 in old money
I'd like to think that if I return, hindsight being what it is, I would not need to deploy the 24" gear.
That aside, the ride is as flat as you would expect it to be in that neck of the woods.

no, it's an absolute total lie. The hill is a monster. But the view is to die for. Well, to almost die for.
Phew! Normal service has been resumed. All is right with the world.

I shall have two gears. One less than 60" with a most delicious raa-aaa-aaaa-aaaa-aaa-ck sounding freewheel and the eternal backup 24". And I'm not to proud to deploy the back up.

We can walk up together.
Can I walk with you two too? I could do with a pair of minders on a dark night.

The halfway stop was completely deserted and run down and the staff asleep. Bring your own.

Spiffy report Agent H. One small point of clarification: For the halfway stop do we bring our own coffee, or our own staff? I'm sure both options are open to the majoirity, but fitting in with the others is often so important.
