I've had a change of heart and am now wondering if anyone is up for cycling back from Whitstable? Not via the A2 (or at least not the 6 lane Gravesend section )

Your going to miss a good drink Martin..

I have no intention to ever cycle back from Whitstable, ever again.. once was plenty enough... thanks. The only highlight was Shooters hill for me... ;)

Sorry but the decision has been made to give up alcohol so unfortunately hanging around in a pub is probably not a good idea......

I am planning to cycle back as I did last year with Redflight & RB58.
We took the A2 to Gillingham, then I cut across country over the downs

to home.

I shall be cycling back again this time. Providing I can get a plate of chips before we leave. Couldn't do it without the chips you know

If I'm remotely in the vicinity I'll do the final waymark, or relieve whoever is there when I arrive, assuming I'm not already at the very back. Fingers crossed everything will be complete and, as a special tribute to Simon, I'll debut the Pompetamine on its first night ride. I have my little Smiley Simon checklist:-

large heavy tyres - check
full mudguards - check
rack - check
hub gear- check
lack of quick release on rear wheel - check
dynamo front wheel - check
heavy Brooks saddle - check
flat pedals - check
disc brakes - check
crosstop levers - check
dynamo lights - ordered from Bike24 in Germany today

He masks it well with that poncey Colnago thing but I know that pictures of the above sort of bike set his pulse racing.

I can't get involved in the final sprint, I just couldn't do that to the likes of Davy and Ian, they'd never recover from the shame of being whipped by such a bike.

Oh, considered riding back and I fully expect to still be having the odd giggle about the idea all the way through the drinking session.

I hope the fry up lives up to Steve VW's offering at Dunwich beach car-park, after the night ride.

For £5 I had, at 8.30am:

two pints of cold lager

six sauasages

four rashes of bacon

organic fried egg

three baps

tea

coca-cola.

I then slept on the pebbles of the beach car-park from 9 until 11.30! Never did see the beach. Though glimpsed the sea on leaving.

The Whitstable breakfast is one of the best, but I doubt you'll ever get as good value as you do from the Steve's CC Cafe.

As long as you have the spanner...

I know that I go on about carrying stuff, but we had two women give up on the Bognor ride, and they both had about 45lb of bike and kit to haul along. When you've done a couple of these rides you know what's what, but it is a shame that new riders turn up looking as if they're going to bike to the top of K2

No rucksack = no baked goods though!

I can keep you company at the back. I'll hold everybody up anyway. I'm armed with a much better pump this time though. Fans of the rucksack may be dismayed to hear that I've managed to lose it somewhere in my house.

It can all be part of a socialist ideal though. From each according means that some people make cake but don't necessarily carry it, letting others carry it for them the common good. To each according means that the cake gets eaten by those who need want it.

The mistake comes when the weakest riders ride the heaviest bikes, carrying the most stuff and the strongest riders ride the best bikes carrying nothing.
ah, but the strongest riders might not be the strongest - it might be that they appear so because they carry so little! Susie's entire equipage (sp?) is probably less than seventeen pounds including lights.

Given the choice between having some kit I don't need, and not having something I do (particularly pump & inner tubes) I'll go for the latter every time. I don't like having jersey and jacket pockets crammed full of stuff that I might lose, and there's no other way to carry the D-lock, or my pump. Decent locks are heavy...and no point using a lock if it isn't decent. The freebie cable one I had broke anyway. And no way am I ever leaving the Viner unlocked out of my sight! The food never goes uneaten either. The rucksack isn't ideal, but it does the trick.

Only because she's got you to carry most of it!
