FNRttC Friday Night Ride to the Coast 22nd October to Whitstable 2010

After a glorious night of cycling, some socialising in the biting northerly gale whipping off the North Sea on the open deck of the Waterfront Club and maybe a light refreshment of some sort, I'm going to be riding back.
Back towards Bromley.
Bromley, where other people that ride bikes and who should know better but just so happen to be in Whitstable at stupid o'clock of a Saturday morning live.
So who's with me?

Or do I have to clatter down the steps on my own, the sound of clinking glasses, laughter and rustling pertex in my ears as I question my sanity while those above are well beyond interrogating theirs?

I have a route planned, the majority of which I've ridden before (the first few miles after Faversham will be new to me as the last time I attempted this my GPS caught something off of Aperitif's and fell in love with the A2). It's a sheltered route keeping out of the wind. Picturesque, with a fair few views an' a bit of history. It will also keep the body temperature up with a decent amount of climbing. The route is overwhelmingly quiet roads until picking up the A21 on the run in to Bromley. There is a more than decent pub after 25miles or 40km at The Black Horse Inn at Thurnham on the Pilgrims' Way and Maidstone should cater for anything else that may be required. Should there be a need to bail the route also passes close to several rail stations once past Maidstone. I'm up for finding alternative routes into London as Green Street Green isn't the most auspicious entry to a metropolis that I've ever come across and other routes further north or south might suit others, I'm also up for taking an entirely different route if there is, for example, a route one consensus. Or it might happen that possibibly just sittin' on the Waterfront deck, gently rustling in the breeze integrating my thingummy... wotsit... is all that I'm good for.

Howdo Ben. There's a good chance Ian and I will join you, and there might be a few more on the day.

Or one less, if my darling daughter persists in waking up in the small hours for a feed. No insulation in the trailer, so can't really bring her along.

Yet.

killing time in a nice warm pub seems like a good plan to me - tis what I'll be doing! Though not in the lycra!

Last month I set off to Southend without a bracing espresso. We’re neighbours. Fancy a shot in Soho on the way in? (All welcome.)

I'll be shadowing the A2 (note the "shadowing, not "riding on") back into London so it all depends which way you're taking back into Bromley.

I'd not be too sanguine about riding back. The xcweather forecast has changed. We're in for a bit of rain at the end of the ride down, but the bad news is that there'll apparently be an inch of rain in the afternoon and early evening - with a westerly breeze

Hi Andy, I'm thinking of bringing some gears so I'm looking forward to being more sociable on the hills.

Martin, I did include a link but it isn't particularly clear:

Return route from Whitstable.

It doesn't shadow the A2 but heads off across country as soon as it leaves Faversham.

Adrian, one meets a much finer quality of tar-mac when landing on one's arse in Bromley and one doesn't end up in Mayday.

I'm hoping to be home by 1ish in the afternoon hopefully missing the worst of the rain. Still will wait and see. Also depends slightly on other people, cycling in the rain is bad, cycling on your own in the rain is very bad.

Hi Ben,
Myself, Ross and Redflight did this earlier this year. We hit the A2 all the way to Rochester, nice and fast, traffic not too bad, then I hit west, cross country to Orpington which was quite hilly, but not too bad. Will send you the route tonight, see what you think.

I'm hoping to be home by 1ish in the afternoon hopefully missing the worst of the rain. Still will wait and see. Also depends slightly on other people, cycling in the rain is bad, cycling on your own in the rain is very bad.

You'll be ok Big M - just get a tow from Ben, and be supping tea in front of the telly by midday! Ben's raisonnement that his geared bike is more 'sociable' will be the difference between 'gone' and 'I can just see him'

Naughty Ben! Looks like a fast return group. Warp factor one will keep the attire dry - the tyres wet.

you could always hang out in Look Mum No Hands, but, then again, you might have your head turned by the bright young fixie things.........
