Just so long as Simon doesn't have a cat on his lap, and is rubbing his hands together... Oh wait...

I'm planning to ride on, but not back. Because back is not where it's at. For me, anyway.

When I hit the seafront I'll fortify myself with brekkie and then head west along the coast to Chichester. There I'm going to go north over the Downs and then NE back to the 'Sham. Slowly. Cake and Ale may play a part. Caffeine and 'profen will be waiting in the wings. One of my many b-i-l's has threatened to join me for part of it. On a mountain bike. On my son's old MTB to be precise.

When the Martlets first started I worked in Brighton a guy who worked with me spent his last few days there. I always meant to make a worthwhile donation but just never got around to it. Then along comes Dellzeqq with his Dr Bike, and his BSO's, and his ghastly multicoloured emails, and his subtle blandishments to be a tec and blow a whistle outside the abodes of the wealthy.

Serendipity. something just had to be done. 82% and counting....

Thinking about riding back myself, but (again) strong easterly winds forecast. See how I'm feeling on Saturday morning I think...

Am glad you've said that as I've pre-emptied it just incase (so i've checked the route home from there) and if it was okay to tag along with you then that would be great!

I once rode a tandem hopefully. I was still hopeful of mastering it even as it careered off the road and entered the ditch which was to be its front wheel's undoing. Literally.

Undaunted I once raced a tandem in an MTB event. Never, ever, been so scared on a bicycle off road before or since...

Backsides. Tandem. Hopefully.

(Thank you for acting as agent provocateuse Claudine - I got a lovely text yesterday evening from a young tarte)

Did she ask for pictures of the injuries? It's easy to mistake Schadenfreude for fond concern . She's still flimsily proclaiming it "too cold" for an FNRttC, of course - I trust you were suitably scathing if the subject came up?

Route? Route? What route? Oh yes I better think about that in advance I suppose... NCN2 west bound to Chi and the measliest most minorest decent roads over the downs, possibly including an off road surfaced cyclepath to West Dean and thence back t'Sham in a drunken zig zag holistic navigation stylee. The A272 will probably butt in at some point and spoil things but that's a country lane with big pretensions for you.

The (any) company would be welcome. Will you say the same afterwards? Another matter entirely. When I say 'slowly' I mean very VERY slowly by the standards of any kind of competent cyclist, i.e. being overtaken by children on BMX's, tots on scooters, and old maids on bewickered Pashleys kind of slow.

So slow that at times I appear to be travelling backwards.

It works for me. Sort of. Most days.

I'm never scathing - but I do have A level schadenfreude...I regularly practice it on myself. Every word was tender and warm: "Best stay in until the warm weather comes 'kostbarer vogel'..." I think I said...

Davy as wingman? - A match made in heaven, Greg! Just watch what he scoffs at the refuelling points. Oh - and get in touch with the rural district council and get the OS grid ref. for every toilet en route...

Or are you a changed man Davy - you did allude to it?

Cathy and I are borrowing a tandem hopefully. Am ridiculously excited.

Have fun, I once fell off the back of a tandem and my foot ended up being at 90 degrees to my leg, this I knew was not right, I had broke my tib and fib. Anyway, have fun...

The attached zip file contains a shoddily prepared gpx route from Chichester to Shamchester-sur-Arun such as could be viewed on the most very excellent bikehike* I may even load it on my Garmin so that I can have it on there for when the batteries run out.

*other routeplanning websites are available to waste your afternoon on**

** but none so far as I know incorporate both OS and OpenCycleMaps mapping. Which is what floats mon bateau mes amis.
