Unlike the world according to Chicken-Licken, the only thing that fell from the sky was water. And lots of it. Too much to go cross-country through fields which meant heading up a hill. But that was alright as a certain McWobble who had encouraged me up Turners Hill last month, reassured me that the hill ahead was nothing like Turners Hill. Indeed it wasn't. It was much steeper! I was horrified. One, two, three, four I counted each turn of the pedal to keep them moving. Somehow I made it to the top and as soon as I retrieved my breath - about 10 minutes later! - I suggested to McWobble that his hill estimation was slightly askew...!

Turners Hill is a climb of 86 metres over 4km
Houghton (Bury) Hill is a climb of 111 metres over 2.6km
Ditchling Beacon is a climb of 189 metres over 2.7km
Hills en route to Whitstable are mere legend. We won't go there.

Approximately.

Most certainly. Turners Hill starts just after the Dukes Head roundabout. Now fair play, it has a huge sting in the tail, half that total height gain is in the last 600 metres!

So which is it to be in the revised standard version...

Turners Hill is a climb of 86 metres over 4km

vs

Turners Hill is a climb of c50 metres over less than 1km

So what you're trying to say is that the FNRttC goes up hills occasionally??

On reflection, I might query the length for Ditchling as well. Measuring from the cross roads with Underhill Lane, I reckon it is 1.6k to the top. Although the road is a bit uphill from the turning off Clayton Road, it is not the same sort of uphill.

The Beacon from the crossroads to the top is about 1.5km by my reckoning. Any measurements including the lead-in are merely to make it seem less intimidating to novices.

It is the lead-in that makes it so tough for novices. I used to be one. By the time they/you get to underhill you are already on the red line!
