Hah! Any ideas about the route yet? I was thinking shortest possible (follow A23 maybe adjacent to it on the west side). Up through Crawley, Redhill, Merstham... ? Oh and I've never done a ride back after one of these before. Will likely be a bit grumpy after a lack of sleep!

Near enough....Over and down Devils Dyke, Handcross, Pease Pottage, Crawley, Gatwick, Redhill, Merstham and Croydon...A23 bike path is slow and full of glass and crap.

The cycle path alongside the A23 out of Brighton isn't bad and has the BIG advantage of avoiding Devil's Dyke. You then pick up our normal route at Pycombe. After Crawley I shall be heading over my usual cross country route (Copthorne, Lingfield, Edenbridge, then one of Hosey, Toys or Ide Hill depending on my legs, then Polhill and so on) rather than up the A23 via Croydon which can be busy on a Saturday morning.

Ant - I'm happy riding on main roads, but I wouldn't recommend the A23 from Brighton to Crawley. It's a very fast dual carriageway and quite nasty in places - especially Handcross Hill which will be lethal on a bike. We normally run parallel to it, to the west. And it's a cracking country route - apart from The Dyke that is.

Oh, and as for grumpiness. That's not usually a problem, unless someone's rear mech implodes. Which of course never happens on a ride back from Brighton ;-)

Should be fine as it's looking like there will be more then 3 people...

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Which route might Team Slow take? Depending on my sleep deprivation situation after tonight and the route back to town I might still tag along - I could do with a long ride. But I've got to get to central London and northwestwards, so would either need to end at somewhere I can pick up a train, or be pointed in the right direction.
