But Stu! That reasoning implies that you have forsaken the ethos of the Friday Night Ride and decided to put the HAMMER down (instead of your good self for a change...) and arrive at the Waterfront in the leading group, rather than disseminate your vast experience among the less able riders who might need shielding from inclement breezes, fatigue and all sorts of everythings. It is perhaps their loss to see you scoffing your breakfast when they arrive!

For a man who mentions 'Drax' without batting an eyelid, how could Whitstable be described as brutal? (Apart from trying to buy multiple groupsavers with Monsieur Jobsworthio at the ticket office?)

Did you know that if you get large enough parties you can get shown round Drax? I'm not sure that even Dellzeqq could talk them into a 4am tour with 100 cyclists - they might get the wrong idea. We lost our cooling towers a while back. Did you not know that all these power stations block out the sun, so we have such a light complexion?

Whitstable just seems to go on for a very long time. Flat rides don't suit me all that much, I tend to ride at whatever pace I feel is right at the time and people get very strung out on that ride and disappear into the distance. This is fine on your own, but not so good in a group where you're riding to time. There's still something about Whitstable I'm not sure what, even considering the peleton effect in Bognor, that seems to make me very tired. Rich P and Sittingduck found it hilarious with their little photos and captions.

I'd rate Manchester the easiest, then Bognor (homage to roadside trees ride) and Cleethorpes about the same, then Brighton and Whitstable the hardest.

Can't particularly remember anyone apart from myself complaining about Whitstable, although I think the odd person has agreed it is more difficult than some of the others. I think Whitstable is harder for a variety of reasons that are not applicable to other people. I'm not sure what the consensus view would be.
I think technique counts for a lot on the Whitstable ride. Concentrate, change gear early, let your back and legs relax, and you've got a decent ride. And it definitely pays to get rid of all the clobber on the bike. If you've got a load of stuff pushing the back end from side to side, and you don't anticipate the changes in gradient, or take the bends smoothly it can be really tiring.

I think the dash across the Graveney marshes is a bit of a tradition. For myself, I love being at the back - the marshes act as a kind of 'relax' (as in 'relax, none of them died') and I'll sometimes stop just to take in the peace and quiet
