I think the body's ability to warm up goes on the blink in the early hours - I always reckon light layers and at least one light layer more than you think is neccessary - you can always stuff the extra layer in your back pocket.
it's the time after the halfway stop that can get to you, and going over the Humber Bridge might be really chilly.
So, all in all, you might be better off in longs

Alas it's the wrong chain, or we could ride to the Walmgate shops and make it the Friday Night Ride to the Costcutters.
(Actually, their headoffice, I discovered the other week, is not far outside York!)

Like Simon says, it can get surprisingly cold overnight, even sometimes in the middle of the summer. I've only rarely worn shorts for FNRttCs, and there are photos out there, of me on rides with ice in my hair, where I'm still claiming that it's only a bit "nippy" out.
If it's a really balmy evening, like earlier this week, and 18-19°C at 10pm, then shorts would probably be fine, otherwise I'd wear something longer.
Waiting around for 45 minutes whilst a complex mechanical, or multiple fairy visits are sorted out (and this has happened more than once), can leave you very cold if you're just in shorts and a short sleeved jersey.

Folks, have sent PM to Simon and Luke as I'm now extremely dubious for this ride. Fridays tumble led to A&E visit this morning and have cracked bone in left wrist. No cast, just support bandage but doctor wasn't too keen on idea of riding that soon. But, doctors, what do they know eh?

Oh mac that is sad news another thing to remember is that even though the wrist may feel good to go by then if you have had the preceding 2-3 weeks with minimal cycling then 100kms through the night may be more of a challenge than usual. maybe best to wait for bognor the week after or even brighton in july- both of which have the added incentive of my attendance hope you get it sorted soon though
