If your income is from work, then your (financial) interests are those of the working class. If your income is from rent or investments, then your interests are those of the rentier class.

Arguing about brown sauce vs balsamic seems to me to be failing to acknowledge this far more basic point about who society is/should be set up to favour

Is there something wrong with being midde class?

If you like being labelled middle class, there is nothing wrong with that, what is wrong is the whole concept of a class system and the discrimination it brings.

You "do a good northern accent". Well, that's great. How insulting.

An excellent post all round.

I was born and raised on the Hampshire/Surrey border which, if there is such a thing, is as “middle class” as you can get.

I’ve lived in the Midlands for four years, Yorkshire for four and Lancashire for the past thirty-six but other than picking up words have never lost my accent. I speak with what I think of as Received Pronunciation. Many years ago, in my ignorance, at the time, I once commented I don’t speak with an accent as accents are a deviation from the standard. I got in to a great deal of trouble over that one and learned an important lesson.

As for class I feel most would put me in the “middle class” bracket. These days I think it’s rather meaningless but know full well what is meant by “that’s so middle class.”

My views are very different from my parents. My close friends and I see ourselves as part of a golden generation the like of which we may not see again for decades. We understand how fortunate we are and have been. We do have many of the trappings of what some perceive as middle class. My wider social circle is very similar.

Oh dear.

Tragic.

I haven't really the inclination to pick apart the rest of your posts, but there's inflammatory garbage aplenty there you'd do well to comb over and wonder if you ought to have strewn on this thread, like an urban fox climbed in your head looking for a snack and tossed your thoughts all over our drive.

But, let's just give this one a forensic look-over, huh?

(Of course, the thread's designed to fit bespoke for the North-South Divide Posse. Anyone expressing outrage that the North is being taken in vain will be summarily chewed up by the Posse. They'll be along in a minute.)

You "do a good northern accent". Well, that's great. How insulting. Nice to know you can slip effortlessly into one of our working men's clubs up here, order a pint of black and tan, and relax without getting your head kicked off for being posh. Well done you. Thanks for confirming that the middle class have us pinned to our cultural stereotypes so tightly, like little collected moths in glass-fronted drawers, for their titillation.

You "go very posh when middle class is needed"! Oh my. When is it needed? You mean, when you're pretending to be someone you don't think you are? Tell us more. On second thoughts, don't bother. I can only imagine you'll tell us about your time eating little fried doves with a napkin on your head, or when you got the business card of a really good orthodontist while on a cruise. FFS

"I don't realise I'm doing it" Of course you realise you're doing it. You've just told us in detail all about it. You're rather proud of your shapeshifting. Maybe it's time for you to come down and decide who you are, and have the courage to be that person, however many degrees you have and whatsoever the degree of "posher" you are than your partner.

Upthread someone complained we hadn't got angry enough. Bloody hell. I'm spitting feathers here, and I usually resist the urge to respond to "taunt" threads like this. I've just reread your Post 60! Are you real?

You've already called me a snob if I identify with working class. You're happy to pepper your idle posting with insults, down and back to those you think you're trampling over. And then dismiss it all by saying none of it really matters.

Your posts define the very essence of petty bourgeoisie: worrying but unsurprising that we're still talking like this.
I am in no way criticising your reaction here but I do find your post and your "spitting feathers" interesting in that there is a member on these boards that continually perpetuates and mocks a grotesque caricature of the working class and "Northerners" yet I have never once seen them called out on it, in fact they generally get a smattering of likes for it, maybe it's just bantz when they do it?

I currently have 39 members on "Ignore". I have a rule never to peek under the radar.

Back to the topic of cycling, has anyone else noticed how those middle class types tend to wear black cycling gear and ignore your friendly gestures, while us working class types tend to wear high viz,or vivid coloured cycling gear and respond to friendly gestures?:cuppa:

No, never noticed that.

I just took the quiz.

Based on the truthful answers I gave, apparently I'm part of the "Established Middle Class"

Trust me, that is utter nonsense.
