Hi,

Noob here.

Looking for a front derailleur.

The cable routing runs along top tube.

Spec is, i think:-

44T
32T
22T

the big 3 front cogs
X 7 Spd.

What is the clamp measurement?
Where do i measure?

Want to make sure i get the right one.

I think i understand what top pull/bottom pull, dual pull and top swing/bottom swing.

I need top pull therfore i think. though i'm not sure if top swing matters so much

please fill me in.
sorry such a basic question. i measured the width of tube - 9.3cm

cheers

Welcome to the forum!

Per Harris the common clamp sizes (the diameter of the seat tube where the clamp goes) are:

  • 1 1/8" (28.6 mm) clamp on. (This is the traditional, standard type for most road bikes and older MTBs.
  • 1 1/4" (31.8 mm) clamp on for mildly oversized seat tubes.
  • 1 3/8" (34.9 mm) clamp on for oversized seat tubes, common on aluminum frames.

Hi,

Ahhhhhhhh...The diameter!----------Thank You All!-

I just measured D.- It looks under 30mm to me.

Bike: Kona Lava Dome (Bought New- 1997)

Cro-mo alloy frame , i think you call it.

I reckon it's a 28.6

I'm thinking the 31 & 34 might be for newer bikes and/or where aluminium is more common..

older MTB's

mmmm.........

I've just ordered a new complete set of avid-3 brakes(2004). i'm thinking the ones it came with are avid 1. (the levers feel aluminium-ish... ) the back V was missing a pin, and all cables benefit from overhaul.
And isaw some good value shimano cables for the gear overhaul .I put on a new mtb front tyre & grips.Returning the bike to the way it was .A younger brother used it a for a few years but left it more as a road bike,& with parts missing.

thx so much!!!!

Hi,

I found this site via one of your links

http://bikepedia.com/Search.aspx?Q=kona+lava+dome

96-98 models largely listed a spec of -
front derailleur(shimano stx) top swing, top pull 28.6mm

so that makes me confident to order the -28.6, top swing, top pull,44T,7spd

it was listed at the time in a bike mag-97- as one of the best value bikes for £500.solid.
prob. still has'nt dated.
