front derailleur

will a shimano 7speed tourney front derailleur work with shimano 8speed Claris derailleur with 8speed cassette . as the trim positions on the Claris STI shifters don't seem to move much. any advice on set up would be appreciated. thanks.

Should do as they both use a 7/8sp chain, so long as you are using 8sp shifters, 7sp shifters are not designed to work with 8sp cassettes.
For the record I had a Sora FD3300 7sp triple that worked with 9sp Sora 3500 shifters and a 9sp chain.
The trim isn't supposed to move much, just enough to take any chain rub off, when towards the extremes.

My Carrera TDF came with that exact set up as new out the box, yes it does work

thanks for your advice. Just looked at shimano tech specs on front derailleurs and hey say the tourney FD is for a 7speed and the Claris is for an 8speed cassette. so its still a bit confusing.

It will be fine, if a 7sp FD3300 (sora) works on a 9sp then the Tourney will work on the Claris and vica-versa

thanks for advice, I have got them working and it seems that cable tension is critical .
