I think it was fair enough. Maybe Froome overdid it slightly, but when he’s labouring for hours up a mountain under all that pressure I think that’s very understandable.
Regarding the sub-discussion starting up on this thread, I can’t see any need at all for any more fencing and marshalling than there already is. Having thousands lining the road up the mountain, squeezing together and forming an incredible tunnel of colour and noise is the heart of le tour. I’ve been several times and the atmosphere is wonderful- and very very supportive of all the riders, not just the favourites. It’s an amazing thing and I would encourage anyone to get to a couple of stages in the Alpes/Pyrenees if they can because it is very special.
And let’s be fair- considering how close everyone can get, for free, there are barely any incidents at all, hence the big publicity to this little event. So I don't think anyone needs to worry too much about "those crazy spectators" either.
