Frost - will changing tyres make me less likely to end up on the deck (again)?

Studded tyres don't destroy themselves on tarmac. Been using mine for 5 winters and the tyre is more likely to wear out than the studs.

I don't use mine often- only when it snows and for the few days afterwards when some side-roads are still icy- but I've not lost a stud on my Snow Studs in the same period.

I've never ridden with studded tyres - my climate never demanded it - but now that I live with ice, I am curious. What is it like to ride with studs on asphalt when the ice has melted? What does it sound like?
I rode mine today for the first time this winter. The main thing I noticed was I actually needed to steer the bike, rather than just leaning. It felt a bit like riding a piece of farm machinery. Also, ironwork becomes even more hazardous. My commute takes me across tram tracks which I negotiate very carefully when on studs.

No tyre will grip on ice, full stop. It doesn't matter how wide it is or what compound it has, it will just slide from under you. The only way studded tyres will grip is if they dig into the surface and that won't happen on hard ice.

Depends on the tyres, and the speed you ride. I've shredded a pair of 700c 25 studded tyres in about a mile of ice less / snow less Tarmac.

You are the only person I know that's had trouble. Name and shame the tyre. I ride quite alot on tarmac with the Snow Studs, especially if it's been wet then icy, as my 'off road' route gets stupidly muddy, and I end up covered in mud before work. I ride upto 25 mph on the MTB.

Yes me too, I think I'm using mine for the 4th winter? Which year was the one they started getting mentioned on here but they were in short supply in the uk so I like others ordered from Europe. I've ridden mine on Tarmac more than they have ridden on snow.
