Simple cycle computer - I like to know how far I've gone. Used a cyclometer before they came out.

Sometimes I use GPS based route tracking using my phone.

There's always a bell on my bars, and a battery light if I know I'm going to be out after dark.

Each to their own, it's just personal choice.

I admire you and your freedom. Can't do it myself. I tend to do a lot of diy by GPS Audax. so I have a Garmin 800 to navigate with, then a garmin 200 for back up and sadly a cateye strada as well. Plus lights, handlebar bag, etc etc.

I would love to be a minimalist but surely there is nothing better than sitting down, working out a new route online (Bikeroutetoaster or similar) and simply downloading it to your Garmin and following the pink dotted line? Follow the pink dotted line and admire the beautiful surroundings instead of pulling out a map every 30 minutes. (I appreciate this appeals to some people ^_^ )

I only have a basic cycle computer on my handlebars, thats enough for me, I recon cycling was better years ago when we didn't have the gadgets, we just enjoyed riding our bikes.

I like Skol

A Minging Manc...
Rode my 22yr old Raleigh on the commute today it has 14spd down tube shifters and......... well, that's all really. Enjoyed it every bit as much as my normal bikes with cycle computers. I'm mainly just interested in distance covered. The rest is irrelevant.

I like to know how fast and how far I've travelled. I like to know that my fitness is improving and that my averages are going in the right direction.
Guess this means I don't enjoy cycling as much as those that don't use gadgets
Are you likely to still enjoy cycling when the techie stuff indicates that you have peaked and are now on the downward spiral? Just asking, cos that's the situation I find myself in. It's obvious without the need to refer to instruments^_^

I took the precaution of never achieving my genetic potential when I was younger. My plan was to try a little bit harder each year, enough to offset the ageing process. Unfortunately, I miscalculated and buggered up my body last year so my cycling ability is now that of a 90 year old man who doesn't get out much!

I had a similar theory regarding acquisition of certificates of academic knowledge. I noticed an older person achieving a certain level of certification received great acclaim than a young person achieving the same level of certifcation, and decided to leave my advanced studies until later in my career. Strangely, I never did resume my studies, and look where that got me.

I cocked up my first attempt at a degree and wasted 9 years before going back to try again, and finally succeed.

The trouble was - I was playing career catch-up after that and never did! When I started work after graduating, people of my age were managing me, and younger people were coming up under me with better skills in emerging technologies. Eventually, my managers were 10 years younger than me and it did my head in!
