I bought a good Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray on eBay for £70. It's a small but nifty Android smartphone but they do not hold their price as well as more popular bigger phones so you can find them cheap. For example, this one might be worth a punt?

It is a great size for carrying in a pocket when cycling or walking. The screen quality is really good but it is small so you need reasonable eyesight and it is best to use a stylus on the touchscreen unless you have tiny fingers.

I am another happy giffgaff customer.
Sorry the Punt went just after the Euro came in in. Ran side by side for a year, but now no longer legal tender.

Any idea what gifgaf is like for roaming?
Prices here. Data use is expensive abroad so remember to turn it off! Texts in EU are cheap (8p to send, free to receive).

Ha ha. It will have to be squid then, or are they off the menu too!

In between here and there
The whole thing is doing my blumen head in.
Just remember the phone is not free, you are buying on the never never, getting tied in to a contract. My phone is paid for by work but all my family are on various Tesco mobile sim only only deals.

Take a look at Handtec for the price of the phones

Galaxy S2,refurbished on ebay, unlocked. About £150. Phone is still very much cutting edge in most ways.

I have the S3. Better for GPS apps than s2 because it also uses Russian sats. Fast fix and accurate.

This is a cheaper version of a mobile phone.

Soooo, I went and got the Nokia Lumia 925 on Monday. Great bit of kit, but there's no reception in my house, took it back today and cancelled the contract. Back to square one. Doh! :cursing:

We forgot to mention checking the reception!

I used to be on Orange and could never get a signal unless I stood close to a door or window. Giffgaff uses the O2 network and I get a good O2 2G signal everywhere in my house and out and about in the town so texts and calls are no problem. There is no 3G signal whatsoever though so data is out, but I don't tend to use my phone much for internet here in the valley. If I want to quickly check something when I'm out, I can use wifi in lots of places, including many of the local cafes.

Before deciding on a network, see if you can find a friend/relative/colleague with a phone on that network and use that phone to check the signal where you would be using yours. Remember to check 3G reception as well as 2G if internet access is important to you.
