I have not watched very much of it, but I have read a lot about it. What I was wondering was, considering all the sex scenes and the low life expectancy of most the characters, shouldn't there be more pregnant women and small children running about?

There are. In fact there are entire sub-plots based around it.

I've not been watching it but the wife has. Every time I walk in the room there seems to be a sex scene and/or some very colourful language (from the TV, not the wife). I not sure what TV genre it's supposed to fall into, but at a guess I'd say 'soft porn'

The first episode of season 1 was a bit too fruity - my kids were rather young. I have been informed the 'fruityness' gets less in later series ? Does it ?

In later seasons it is very much about the violence and less about the sex (unless you are Jerome Flynn who has sex with everyone except Lena Headey which occurred in real life).

There are shows with far more graphic sex, violence and language Spartacus, True Blood and Banshee for example. Game of Thrones is pretty extreme for such a popular show, I suppose.

You'll never see Flynn & Headey in the same scene. She wasn't pleased when he was cast and flat out refused to work with him.

Spartacus is a hilarious parade of muscle and shaving, True Blood is camp nonsense and Banshee is a perfectly choreographed ballet of violence.

Spartacus was pretty good in a terrible sort of way. Oiled up Muscle Marys with Australian accents doing OTT fight scenes and stilted pseudo-Latinised dialogue. Lucy Lawless and John Hannah were decent in it though.

I saw a few episodes, can't see what all the fuss is about. Comes across to me a basically a soap opera set in a medieval fantasy world with a dragon or two in it. I say soap, since if you compare it to modern soaps, it's still about scheming, plotting, lying cheating, backstabbing with a bit of sex & occasional murder (falling soap ratings always result in either a doomed wedding or murder). Put the GoT lot in Albert Square and there's not much difference except CGI dragons are expensive. I gather fans aren't too happy with the ending.

You can deconstruct any work of fiction thusly and come to similar conclusions.

How about: a cruise ship captain has an unrequited romantic interest in someone whose husband died off-screen while under the cruise ship captain's previous command and now the love interest and her prodigious son are living on board leading to awkwardness and minor interpersonal conflict which sometimes threatens to cause difficulty.

I must have watched a different Game of Thrones, don't remember much sex scenes in it, try Happy! if you like violence
