Tail End Charlie

Well, write it down boy ......
Mine are in hanging baskets. The current ones are rubbish but the first ones I got - specifically for baskets did OK for a couple of years. When I came to replace them those varieties weren't available. I'm not impressed with the replacements.

The pick-your-own farm is growing them on raised beds too. I bet that makes it more attractive to pickers than crawling along the beds.

I had thought of hanging baskets, although I didn't know there are varieties specifically for them. Good to hear it works, if only for a short while.

My latest thought is to cut an old whisky barrel in half (lengthways) and mount on some form of legs.

We have a few strawberry plants in large pots in the garden and they have been cropping really well for the last week or so.

However our large bed on the allotment has been pretty poor. I think it's just been too dry, and we've not watered enough.

Not had much slug damage this year generally but some damage to the berries from woodlice.

Those blackberries look suspiciously like blackcurrants, but you are a couple of weeks ahead of ours.

I was inspecting our green gague tree this morning and never seen so much fruit on it. Really looking forward to them as they are my absolute favourite fruit

They certainly are blackcurrents and we have loads.

I'm growing cucumber for the first time this year. An F1 female variety in a large, 20/25litre, pot, in a cold glasshouse with full ventilation, it has reached about 4' tall and has produced six very tasty cucumbers. Four have been harvested and I have two, fully developed, still on the plant. Overall for a first effort I'm pleased.

Although I can see plenty of flowers with tiny immature cucumbers behind each flower there is no sign these are going to develop further. With those that have grown and matured I could clearly see the tiny cucumbers begin to swell and then grow. I pay great attention to watering, feeding, training up canes and keeping the plants clean. In particular I never allow this cucumber or my tomatoes to suffer the shock of drying out and/or overwatering.

Any thoughts or tips on this?

Surprised how well the veg and fruit plants look after not being watered for 4 days so gave them a good watering tonight and started the bi daily feeding of tomato plants as we have small fruits arrived

Good crop of garlic this year despite (or maybe because of) the drought we are having.

Really jealous of the neighbouring plot though, best apricot crop I've seen there
