Anyone know why it fails sometimes when clicking on the map at less than 1 mile?

Because Garmin connect is rubbish. Use RideWIthGPS instead.

Even that website can be rubbish at times and so can Strava. I use all three.

My favourite site for building routes is cycle.travel you can export your file with two options specifically compatible with Garmin. RWGPS is good for exporting TCX files to Wahoo devices.

That isn’t a direct answer to your op, but it will get you round Garmin’s rubbish software. Which as alluded to by @ianrauk is the crux of the problem.

I've used RideWithGPS last year and added a route on to my garmin. But I've been scouting out route with one of the websites I've mentioned above s in the last couple of weeks.

I may send Garmin an email with the problem I have.
