I've owned the garmin edge touring for a couple years, how do I go about updating maps so it's more suited for off road riding?

I’m not sure about the touring, but the edge 1000 has been remarkably disappointing. Limited battery, prone to water damage, poor mapping / routing.
I understand the new 530 / 830 are much better, including for off road.
Dc rainmaker provides a lot of resources for cycling tech. He has a lot of stuff on updating maps, such as

I’m not sure how this relates off road though.

Hi,
I put the OpenStreetMap maps on my edge 810 a couple of years ago - worked pretty well & most tracks marked. I'd assume these would go onto the garmin 1000 ok, sure there will be info on it somewhere.

I think I used basecamp - might also be worth searching on this.
