Personally I always use the speed sensor, mainly because I have noticed inaccuracies when using GPS. When cycling at a fixed cadence the speed would alter as I went under tree canopies using GPS, when using the speed sensor the speed wouldn’t alter on the same stretch of road when maintaining a steady cadence.

Riding with the speed sensor enabled is not the problem,it is a good thing. Riding with the wrong value set for the wheel size is the real issue.
