Online calculators are best and accurate, but you can always do a rough calc by assuming wheel 700 is 27". Then calc is wheel size x chainwheel divided by spocket.
Thus a 54x18 setup is (27*54)/18 =81 inches.

The one I remember is ....

A 100" gear spun at 100 rpm means you're going 30 mph.

Reminds me of a quote I read somewhere "...his plan was simple. Turn the110" gear at 102 rpm and he would do a 47"
I think he actually exceeded this with a 45:57 (comp record)

Spot on and early season medium gear time trials was 72 inches.
