gear shift jamming

Hi,

I have a brand new orbea aqua TSR and am fairly new to this road bike game. My left Shimano sora shifter jammed almost immediately and I have no idea why- I can't seem to budge it at all and don't want to do any heavy damage to it by forcing it

Is this a common problem?

I wouldn't have thought so.
Take it back to the bike shop you bought it from.

This is almost certainly the gear cable being too tight. Follow the cable from the left shifter and it will lead you to the rear derailleur. Undo the cable with an allen key and loosen the cable a bit. Or, if you are lucky just rotate the twisty thing near the shifter a bit and that might do it. The shifter can take a fair bit of welly so don't be shy with it.

Quite right! A small flaw in my otherwise brilliant diagnostic. Iainw, please substitute "front" in place of "back" and press on!
