Assuming I can get the current square taper BB out, will an octalink BB fit ok? Only ever dealt in HT2 before.

Bottom brackets don't tend to get seized up so you should be ok, and yes the octalink will be fine. As you're young and fit and traveling light a 25" lowest gear should be fine.

Great. Once adjusted do you think the (road) front mech will be able to handle the smaller chain rings? Cheers.

I have the MTB triple and new BB on the way, should see me right.

Anyone on here ever tried Crosso panniers?

Lucky thing - riding to Romania!

Sounds like you've got your gearing sorted out, so I won't say what I would do.

No: I've used an old pair of Altura panniers that I've had for nearly 20 years and they kept a real downpour out on Sunday evening.

Have a good ride.
