my eldest son (7), at being selected for cross country running training has said he wants to run at the olympics one day.
of course i said that you never know, but it would take a lot of dedication such as training, diet, racing etc and that athletes always miss out on things their friends don't etc, essentially encouraging him but letting know what might lie ahead. didn't deter him one jot.
he did one race last year where he finished a respectable 65/100+ despite the field consisting of half his age and half one year older. he certainly has good natural stamina and certainly has a long-distance runner's physique (well compared to me anyway
), so you never know.
if he thinks my cycling is obsessive, wait until his running gets serious… as it is, training will mean he will miss going to see his girlfriend (aw) and he was not even phased by that (normally they can't see enough of each other).
maybe a fiver on him for the 1500 meters would get better odds now than if he ever makes the olympics…
