Not only writes off some of their season. But losing a number of riders, and good ones at that, coud really impact results/ ability to join breaks, and impact on sponsorship for next year.

I don't think anyone is saying that the driver should be given a kiss and flowers, ...

I've no idea how the Spanish justice system treats serious road offences, but I doubt the driver is relaxed about her immediate future. If the facts match with what's been reported so far, then I'll confess that I'm split. Short of banning UK drivers in RHD countries (and vice versa) there's always going to be a risk that this will happen. It ain't right, it ain't clever, but there's not a lot else you can do.

(I've not done it myself, but did manage to turn down one of Eindhoven's very segregated new bus lanes at New Year. Right past the city's Police HQ)

The riders were side by side in pairs. So this idiot was driving on the wrong side of the road and didn't even stop until she'd ploughed into six riders. Just incredible. It's as if she didn't notice even after she'd driven into people.

It takes a while to stop a car.

UPDATE:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/degenkolb-and-giant-alpecin-teammates-lucky-to-be-alive-says-agent/

“He (Warren Barguill) said he hit the car face on and that the driver didn’t brake and that the impact was brutal. He was also thinking about his teammates. He knows what they avoided.”

John Degencolb:

“Earlier (on Saturday) I had a full anesthesia so that the wounds on my thing, underarm and lips could be stitched. Now I am an ambulance on the way to Valencia, where my left index finger should be fixed in a larger hospital. It is only hanging on by a thread. I can’t remember much about the accident. I wish all the other guys the best too. I will be back in touch.”

I doubt that there are many people who have spent time driving abroad who haven't had the momentary lapse after starting a journey on a small road, coming off a one-way system, etc, in either the country they're visiting or their own country when they're recently returned. What I find difficult to understand is the inability to correct or mitigate the error when something like a bunch of cyclists or a vehicle appear riding or driving towards you on the same side of the road.

MOD NOTE:
A number of posts have been Deleted and others Edited.

This is not the place to be discussing the car driver/ cyclist 'debate' (for want of a better word).

Please keep any comments and posts solely about the injuries, the effect on the riders, their team etc and NOT about the driver's actions.

Thank you.

I'm sure everyone of this forum will join me in wishing eight members of the Giant-Alpecin pro cycling team a speedy recovery following a head-on collision with a car during a training ride in Spain.

The car, being driven by a British woman, was apparently on the wrong side of the road when it collided with the team. Jon Degenkolb, rather gruesomely, had to have an index finger sewn back on, and Warren Barguil has a broken scaphoid and fractured tibia. The other six sustained lesser injuries.

Not the ideal outcome for a training ride, but let's hope these guys recover enough to at least be able to ride part of the 2016 season.

Pro's and regular joe's............. I guess we're all vulnerable. Ride safe folks!

That's going to be one hell of an insurance claim too! £60-70,000 of bikes, loss of earnings, hospital fees etc etc. Top priority though is obviously making sure those guys recover and return to full health as soon as possible!
