Some how somewhere I have mislaid my spare key.
Its a 65 plate Astra.
On FB local section a local guy (gives his home phone number) is advertising.
I was about to contact him when the thought came to me..........
What is to stop him making a 2nd key for himself ??
Any thoughts ??

Nothing stopping him, but it wouldn't do his business any good. Very unlikely to happen. It's not like a 65 plate Astra is a Ferrari. And that said, no point as he's probably got the tech to take a car if it's keyless ignition anyway.

It'll probably be around £300 cut and programmed at the dealer, but itll work.

Independent vendors will do compatible keys for less but they can be less reliable and easier to code-grab.

Pays your money and makes your choice.

Id not sure id want anyone local who isnt either a dealer or a reputable bricks and mortar business having access to my car keys or my vehicles OBD port - its always nice to find ones vehicles in the morning in the same place they left it the might before.

Take your point.
TBF it is 'only' a 2nd key and just sleeps in the house unless needed.

Yes, but the point is a dodgy sort then has the data he needs to make a third.

I have used keysinthepost.com - if i am feeling particularly distrusting or suspicious i get it delivered to a friend / family members address where the car never is - They even suggest this on the site.

However the issue is programming... On one of my cars programming was as simple as turning the key to the II position 10 time and then clicking the button on the key.

Other cars need to be plugged in.

I have also bought fobs from scrappies and then just got a new blade cut. But the programming situation still exists.

I'm tight, and I also lose keys... On my previous car i did away with the clicky fob thing and just used it in the door like a regular key, you then got 10 seconds to put the key in the ignition before the alarm went off.... This caused rage in my missus but it seemed acceptable to me for 4-5 years.

My current car came with one key, apparently the key is quite rare, there was a fire in the factory making them shortly after the production of the car started so they changed fobs (from 4 button to 3 button) new keys/fobs are north of £300 due to the scarcity.

The fob fell apart recently and the thought of spending £300 made me ill, so I bought a new casing from Temu for £7 and swapped over the internals including the RFID thingy chip). To my amazement the new fob feels better than he original as does £7 vs £300

I have also had a spare blade cut just in case i need to get into the car in an emergency - but the blade alone wont start the car.

Timsons - in lots of supermarket franchises & shopping centres?

I would personally be cautious of Timsons on the basis they have a policy of employing ex offenders to get them back into the world of work and reintroducing into the community. For anything else though I have used them.

A local cobblers might do keys? There is one near me that clones an existing car key and is a bit cheaper than having to programme a new one. They also don’t need to be near the car to do it.

I've bought several new keys from Timpson's and not yet had a car stolen. (Mind you, that's possibly because of my choice of car?)
You can watch them sorting out the new key and get it handed to you.
Not saying they couldn't make a spare once you've gone but I think it unlikely.

@PeteXXX i agree, unlikely but all it takes is one individual or bad egg.

For example, the person in a family logistics company, not long ago who brought the whole organisation down causing it to lose money and fold because of a simple password repeat mistake.

I've never had one nicked either.

But I've dealt with enough over the years stolen with an illicit key to not want anyone who advertises on face book to have access to either my key pattern or my vehicles OBD port.
