indoor barbeque?

We're on gas and I'm a big fan as Vernon says of the controllability, but my Mum's new halogen electric hob is light years ahead of what the old ones used to be.

I would think if the Gas bandits are able to skin us for a standing charge now then the electric robber barons won't be far behind.

Get a cooker that's suitable for propane gas, I would think you can get a lot of gas with the 100 quid you,ve saved.

That's one of the options I'm thinking about. Not sure about where the gas bottle could be stored though - would it have to be outside?

May be able to work out somehow from gas use how much that would then cost in bottles.

On the mains tariff the issue is with the gas supplier not the person who looks after the pipe. May be heading towards standing charge but worth looking at options.

My mum lived away from gas supply and had a hob on two big butane bottles (or is it propane?) the orange ones are OK but the blue ones will not work in the cold.

Also this would be a non starter if you live in a flat.

Hope you get it sorted out.

If anyone is still interested in this I have found a supplier - Ebico - who have a zero standing charge for gas. I've just completed the form to transfer to them. The annual bill should be much less than the standing charge from my existing supplier.

I had it done free of charge in the 1980s. We bought a house with a gas supply, but no meter, and wanted the 6 foot pipe that stuck up from the floor in the utility room (Totally unsupported and very rusty!) removed. The Gas people were very unwilling, until I asked them what they would do when my 3 year old swung on it again and broke it? Strangely they were quite keen to come and take it out and so disconnect me from the mains at the property edge. Can't think why???

They did predict severe difficulties and humongous costs 'when' I wanted it reconnecting, along with comets, shooting stars, earthquakes and the world ending but came out and did the work three days later! We had night storage heaters fitted and used the existing open fire and coke boiler so never had the gas reconnected.

My present house, in a small village had no gas when I bought it in 1990, there was no supply to the village. When gas was available the cost and shear embugeration factors offered by the gas people (Something like 7 visits plus deliveries that I HAD to be in for and likely mess from several different sets of workmen in the house.) led me to install night storage heaters and again use the existing open fire. (The storage heaters including a night time immersion heater were installed one Saturday morning with virtually no mess and me taking no time off work to 'wait in for deliveries'.) I have never regretted the choice I made and have loads of fun when offered a dual fuel deal by a salesman in asking how much a ton they charge. The perplexed looks are worth the effort of winding them up!

No it doesn't. Ours is in the kitchen on a two metre hose from the cooker. Of course, this is France , so things will be different.

If you want the bottles outside then they have to be red - propane as it has a lower freezing point

We have two 13kg butane (blue) bottles, so we never run out and one bottle lasts about 200 days and costs slightly less than 30€

(Calor tanks in the garden are for central heating and yes, very expensive)
