It's winter when we all go slower anyway, energy is being used to keep you warm as well as power your legs. Wait till the weather warms up and you'll see an improvement.

Fully agree with that...........did a 25 miler last week with a mate and he (who is fitter/stronger than me) was absolutely knackered after it. I was also glad to get back home. I said to him......"it must be the cold & wind that is draining the energy". Towards the end of last year we had built up to 50/70 milers which didn't take as much out of us as 20/25 milers are doing over winter.

I've never been a speed demon and I'm happy pootling along at a leisurely pace but recently I've seen a drastic reduction in speed and my cycling " fitness" in general.
I had bronchitis a couple of months before Xmas and it really floored me, but I kept up with the couple of miles ride to work each day.
Since Xmas we've moved house and while I'm loving the slightly longer, downhill, commute, the ride home is becoming a real chore and I've resorted to "granny gear" for most of it.
I don't want to give up, but I don't want to lose the joy of cycling.
Any tips or encouraging words to help me get my oomph back?

I'm struggling to get any decent average speed after 3 weeks of bronchitis in December too. As others have said, keep well layered up, don't overdo it and maybe use a Buff over mouth/nose to reduce the cold/damp air intake.

Keep up the good work. I have found that sometimes I need to push things a little to keep up a level of fitnes. I can get a bit complacent at times. There are also so many things to consider, such as terrain, weather conditions, how busy I have been, have I been I'll. DON'T GIVE UP. Even if you are slower, it's still better than sitting in a metal box. I commute by bike every day and it makes me feel alive.

Weird.I'm getting older and faster.

Irritating. I'm getting older and slower.

I wonder if you might have some bronchial constriction. If I were you I would try go get my hands on a blue inhaler (Ventolin/salbutamol) and try using it before your rides and see if that improves things. If it has no affect, no harm done it's not a dangerous drug**, but if it helps, you can talk to your doctor about asthma management.

I have very low level of asthma, that is rarely triggered by anything other than an chest infection. When I was a child, this sort of asthma was called "chronic bronchitis" Ventolin is a big help to me at these times.

**I am not medically qualified in any respect. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before following this course of action. You need instruction on how to use it, and confirmation that it is safe for you.

Something knocked me on my butt in November and given the inevitable Christmas gluttony therafter. I can only honestly now say I'm getting back to feeling something that resembles "fit" again - and I'm a spritely young thing! Ish.

Speed and endurance are two different things. I can't work out where you real problem is. You might want to experiment at your local gym where you can monitor your heart rate and you can assess your breathing on a running machine. See where you heart rate stabilizes around 5-10 minutes in and whether you can still speak conversationally. Play around with speeds until you find the speed you can just keep on going for ever, however slow that may be.. Then try and translate that into riding your bike and getting some long exercise in to really rebuild your strength.

I always think it best to build up our endurance first and speed will just follow. Go off too fast and you just knacker yourself before you really get started.

If nothing else the experimentation above will serve as base measurements to monitor your cardiovascular performance as the year progresses. And the worse you do now - the more impressive the graph will look later!
