Jeez. I didn't realise that was a pro race. I thought it was an Amateur or Sportif type event.

Has anybody else spotted the flying water bottle that nearly takes out a spectator after the crash? I'm trying to see whether the rider had it in his hand or not, which could explain if he was distracted coming into the corner?

From another angle looking back up the hill.

Still, it seems to me any chance he had of recovering is ruined because there is a f*ckin' car in the way. I know cars all over the road are standard in these races, but they do seem to expose the riders to more dangers. The screeching of brakes (9 second point in the video just above) suggests that another accident was narrowly avoided.

Really? From both perspectives posted above, that looked like it was beyond recovery well before the car was an issue. I think the rider in white takes about twice as long to cover the distance between edge of shot and apex in the first view (so half the speed?) and only turns just inside the outer white line. It looks to me like without the race support car, it would be a question of whether Brammeier's hitting the cars parked at the edge or going over the drop.

Seen from other angles you can see the massive fishtail before the rear wheel lifts - not a hope of him stopping before he went over the drop or into the parked cars/spectators. The motorcyclists that got in the way for the other two riders to crash into - that really was dumb.

http://velonews.competitor.com/2015...er-injured-in-high-speed-crash-at-utah_381009 says he was "chasing back to the peloton on the descent from Guardsman Pass in Big Cottonwood Canyon, according to a team press release."

It's reasonable for the cars to be following the peloton, isn't it?
It's not uncommon for team cars to be held back in favour of neutral service cars/motos.

Yeah, agreed. But if he had being going at a speed he could have recovered from, and followed the line the other rider who took the corner wide, he still would have crashed. Yeah, so in the case, maybe the car saved a bystanders life.

As you can probably tell, I don't watch a lot of racing. I was shocked at the olympics how many cars were driving between the pelotons.

Looking at the reverse angle, it seems to me that the braking point for that hairpin is around the previous corner, meaning you have to brake before you even know the hairpin's there. It looks like the rider is trying to take the smoothest line through the previous corner but then just gets caught out by the severity of the hairpin.

It's all the fault of those bogus Andalusian horses... calculating little buggers. :headshake:

There are 2 moderately sharp bends on the descent from Falls Creek, in the Victorian Alps, that cyclists have to watch out for. This is because the bends increase in tightness, so as you round the bend, it suddenly becomes sharper, which takes many cyclists by surprise, and they find themselves on the wrong side of the road. Combine this with any traffic coming the other way, and the end result could be messy.
