Is giga as in gigahertz, gigabytes, etc pronounced giga or jiga? I've always pronounced it giga, but I've just read it's pronounced jiga. It's an American book so is it pronounced differently here?

I have checked the online Cambridge dictionary phonetic spelling and it is a hard-g sound ('g' as in 'good' 'golf' etc).

It's an American book, so they have no idea of the correct pronouncation...

Hard 'g' is what everyone I know says. I do know however that the French pronunciation is 'jiga', so it's not unknown.

The 'g' is French is pronounced more like a 'j' before some vowels, so giga would be pronounced more like jiga. Think of the word gîte (i.e. the place where you stay!) - it is pronounced jite.
