UAE Letting WvA get over the finnestre ahead of the GC race was in hindsight a fatal mistake .... Worse than chasing the break and putting bonus secs back into play

They all decided to stay with their team leader but they didn’t let him, they couldn’t stop him. If they tried the same tactic it wouldn’t have worked because Simon attacked 4 times & broke those two, getting clear of them.

I'm reminded of all those races Sagan was second in because he dragged someone else to the line, and how he had to be prepared to lose to be able to win. I doubt Del Toro remembered that, as he was probably a fetus, but he rode like he'd learnt that lesson already.

He was getting his head kicked in up the Finestre and had very little to give, so no point in him leading there. And if Carapaz didn't work on the descent/valley he was losing the Giro, so wasn't about to give it to the block that had a) been kicking his head in and b) was now sitting on his wheel.

He didn't break them - Carapaz eventually left it to Del Toro to close and he didn't, because Yates was less of a threat to him then than Carapaz.

He didn't do anything wrong. He just didn't have the legs.
The interview and the tactic of letting to the break go out suggests a over focus on EF and carapaz. By the team . I thought Toro rode well but not riding after the summit broke the golden rule of the finnestre

Haven't watched the interview but it all seemed a bit odd at the end. Del Toro seemed quite happy, smiling and having his photo taken. Then Majka rolls across the line with a big grin on his face. Would have expected them to be absolutely devastated to have lost the race.

If Del Toro hadn’t spent much of the week fending off stealthy attacks from Carapaz, he might have been more inclined to cooperate with the EF leader in chasing Yates.
While WVA played a significant part, it only added to the eventual gap, rather than effect the overall outcome.

I think it will sink in "how could we have won"
