Note it's the inability to catch Simon that makes Wout the critical factor .... slightly counter intuitive unless you look at the entire stage

If Wout isn't over the top then Simon can't go anywhere near as hard on the climb as he has to save a load more energy. He knew he had the world's best domestique waiting to give him a free ride. He barely turned a pedal until 6km out.
