I think 1986 was the first year C4 put a highlights show in a fixed place within their schedule. In 1985 there were daily highlights, but they were fitted into whatever space could be found.

I think it was one highlights show for the whole race the first year, or it might have been weekly, but I doubt it.

Relatedly, it looks on the EPG like Giro highlights will be on DMAX at 1900 each racing day.

I was speaking specifically of 1985, the C4 coverage of which was as I described.

In May of that year I did my first and best French cycle tour, and in July noticed that there was a daily highlights show. Initially I was scornful of these namby-pamby racers who don't even carry their own luggage, but before long caved in and decided to have a look. The first day I sat down to watch the stage finished in Pontarlier, the day before the epic to Morzine-Avoriaz, after which I was hooked.

So it looks like the lovely TNT/HBO Max are not offering viewers the option of a 2nd stream that isn't full of ads for the Giro. They have offered it for some other races. Also being forced to watch shouty woman, look at my clothes, boomerang voice and postman pat (i do like matt tho!)
